CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This is an open announcement to fill a temporary, part-time position as needed at various college and community sites. The hours of work and effective date of employment will be arranged with the Coordinator/Department Chair of the Program. Fringe benefits are not applicable.

DEFINITION:

Special Education classes provide specialized instruction to meet the educational needs and goals of students. Under the direction of the instructor, aides assist students in a variety of ways, dependent on the specific needs of the curriculum. Aides are expected to be actively involved in all levels of instruction.

To assist in one or more of the following programs: Career Options through Academic Support and Training (COAST): Program provides specific job and employability skills training to students in a chosen field of study, with the intention of transitioning to the workplace.

Community Intellectual Disabilities (ID) Program: College Program for Adults with Neurodevelopmental Disabilities including Intellectual Disabilities and Autism. Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) Program: Program for adults who have sustained an acquired brain injury. Course work includes an emphasis on fundamental cognitive skills, critical thinking skills, memory compensation techniques, and psychosocial and transition issues. Adaptive Fitness Program: Program for adults with physical limitations to increase and maintain physical stamina and strength.

Examples of Duties: a. Assist the instructor in delivery of instructional materials b. Work in group or individual instructional situations c. Aid in preparation of materials for the class d. Maintain inventories, tools, and equipment e. Set up and tear down demonstrations and equipment, and materials for class projects/assignments f. Set up classroom accommodations for students with specific disabilities

g. Perform other similar duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience: a. Education in a discipline related to social/human sciences or specific discipline as determined by class need. Examples of disciplines: Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Education, Special Education, Human Development, Health Care, Nursing, Kinesiology, and any other related fields. b. Experience which demonstrates skill to work in a special education program as an aide or similar position. c. Or any combination of education and experience that would provide equivalent qualifications

Ability to: a. Assist in the presentation of classroom materials. b. Understand and perform duties as explained through written or verbal communication. c. Maintain accurate records. d. Work cooperatively with others. e. Effectively assist students from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds and ethnicities, including students for whom English is not their native language. Physical Demands: a. Employee should be able to move classroom furniture should a student require an accommodation and like physical demands. Working Conditions: Coastline College Special Programs and Services for Students with Disabilities offers specialized instruction to individuals who have an Acquired Brain Injury (ABI), Intellectual Disability (ID), or in need of Adapted Fitness training. Applicants should be aware and have desire to work with adults who may have one or more of the following disabilities: physical, cognitive, intellectual, and/or psychological/psychiatric.
